Looking Higher This Fourth of July: A 250th Anniversary Meditation on the Sky

This Saturday, I am proudly celebrating right alongside our American neighbours. It is a beautiful country with an undeniable, forward-moving spirit, marking a massive milestone: exactly 250 years since 1776.

Now, I know that for some people, celebrating right at this moment might feel a little complicated or problematic given the noise of the modern world. But as the fireworks light up the night sky this weekend, I want to ask you to direct your attention just a little bit higher. Look past the flashing lights and smoke, and consider a quiet, monumental victory: the steady, historic healing of the Earth’s ozone layer.

A recent announcement on Facebook completely blew up my universe in the best way possible by reminding us that the deepest wound we ever accidentally inflicted on our atmosphere is on track to completely heal by 2066.

This isn’t about getting bent out of shape over the past. Instead, it is a beautiful reminder of what happens when humans choose to work together. We identified a few deeply harmful habits that weren’t helping anyone, we collectively agreed to stop them, and we stepped aside to let the universal qualities of nature do the heavy lifting. As you watch the fireworks tonight, give yourself just a minute to think about that quiet quantum healing process happening right above us. It turns out that even a nation as great as the United States can use a little help from the universe now and then—and it is a wonderful reason to be grateful.
